Value At Work

Multi-Disciplined

Joining HMS Valuation Partners in 1997, Joseph Aguilar (“Joe”) brings 25 years of extensive clinical and healthcare management experience to the firm. He is committed to client service and believes in understanding each client’s unique needs as it relates to ensuring compliance. Joe specializes in providing Fair Market Valuation (FMV) opinions and client advisory services for unique and complex compensation transactions to ensure Stark, Anti-Kickback, and/or IRS compliance for various clients including healthcare systems, hospitals, law firms, and private equity firms. While overseeing the completion of valuations and consulting on economic transactions including employment, income/collection guarantees, foundation models, hospital joint ventures, Joe also collaborates with the HMS team on stackable compensation opinions involving call coverage agreements, research services, graduate medical education, and medical directorships for physicians ranging in specialties.

With considerable valuation experience, Joe has personally completed thousands of valuation engagements in the healthcare industry, and brings unique expertise in both clinical and financial disciplines to client engagements. Joe is a thought leader in the field and has provided educational presentations including, but not limited to Pitfalls in Benchmarking Production Metrics and Compensation, Impact of Midlevel Use on Physician Compensation, Consultative Pearls in Hospital-Based Service Lines, and Allocation of Obstetrical Global Services in Compensation Plans.

Experienced

After graduating from Tulane University with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Joe completed his graduate studies also at Tulane University, earning a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Health with concentrations in Finance and Health Systems Management, respectively.  After gaining valuable work experience in physician management consulting, Joe decided to return to graduate studies to become a nurse practitioner. In doing so, he obtained a Bachelor in the Science of Nursing from Columbia University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Johns Hopkin University in the Family Nurse Practitioner program, and a Post-Master Certificate from Georgia State University in the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program.

Professional Memberships / Certifications:

  • National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts
  • American Health Lawyers Association
  • American Association of Nurse Practitioners
  • Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Board Certified as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner

Well-Rounded

The defining characteristic of Joe’s approach is concrete, technical expertise combined with clinical insight as a provider that is invaluable to his ability to sift through complex data and formulate reliable Fair Market Valuation opinions with accuracy. That unusual skill set is grounded in an engineering degree, three master’s degrees, a nursing degree and hands-on experience as a Board-Certified nurse practitioner. As a well-rounded analyst and valuation expert, Joe’s clients have come to value the ease in working with him and his uncharacteristic relaxed nature for a “numbers guy”.

Value Outside Work

My favorite things to do as a kid were. . .
Eating Happy Meals, enjoying video games like Donkey Kong, and playing competitive tennis.

As a big kid, I like to. . .
Explore new restaurants and places with my wife, as well as play tennis and swim with my son.… I run weekly, and on occasion, steal away time for a round of golf.

One of the things I hope to do. . .
Is to travel more with my wife, compete in a triathalon, and watch my son grow into a young man.
